A search operation was launched in the Keran sector of Kupwara after suspicious activity close to the Line of Control (LoC) today even as the Army called off three counter-infiltration operations in the Nowgam sector.

After the Uri Army base attack, there had been at least five attempts by militants to infiltrate into the Valley. The Army had enhanced vigil along the LoC in view of increased infiltration attempts.

BSF personnel, working under the operational command of the Army along the LoC, resorted to firing in the wee hours on noticing some suspicious activity in Upper Bore of the Keran sector.

The area was now being combed and searches were under way in the sector, sources said, adding that attempts were continuously being made from across the LoC to push in more militants.

Intelligence agencies had warned forces that border action teams of Pakistan might carry out a surprise attack along the LoC. On August 8, three BSF men were killed in BAT action in the Machil sector of Kupwara.

While the counter-infiltration operation in Uri continued for the fourth consecutive day, the Army called off the other three operations in Nowgam.
