The police challaned 125 vehicles, mostly school buses, for overloading and overspeeding here today. Even licences of 25 drivers were recommended for suspension.

Kangra District Police Chief Sanjeev Gandhi today said keeping in mind the safety of schoolchildren the police had launched a drive against overspeeding and overloading by school buses and in one day 125 challans were issued for violating the MV Act. He said there was a dire need to curb overspeeding, overloading and overcharging by such vehicles.

The SSP said the licences of 25 drivers, who were found violating the Motor Vehicles Act, were recommended for suspension. He said these 25 drivers were repeat offenders. Earlier, they were challaned and left with a warning.

He said in the last three days 267 school buses and other vehicles carrying schoolchildren were issued challans and Rs 31,300 was recovered as fine. Hundreds of transport vehicles carried thousands of schoolchildren daily to schools in this district and they needed to be kept under the scanner and the police drive will continue till everything was streamlined, the SSP said.

He said a letter had been sent to the Kangra Deputy Commissioner for fixing the tariff for regulating transport charges.
