Saviour of Kashmir remembered

JAMMU: Forgotten by the government, Jammu today remembered saviour of Kashmir Brig Rajinder Singh, who stopped the Pakistan invaders at Uri in 1947, giving the Indian Army time to land in Srinagar to save the Valley from occupation of Pakistan.

Forgotten by the government, Jammu today remembered saviour of Kashmir Brig Rajinder Singh, who stopped the Pakistan invaders at Uri in 1947, giving the Indian Army time to land in Srinagar to save the Valley from occupation of Pakistan.

A function was organised by the J&K Ex-Services League to mark Accession Day.

The event was attended by Lt Gen KJ Singh, GoC-in-C, Western Command, and other senior Army commanders from the Northern Command.

Civilians and representatives of several organisations also attended the function to pay respect to the great martyrs, who died while fighting against the aggressors from Pakistan.

Speakers highlighted the role of Brig Rajinder Singh and gallant action of Dogra soldiers who fought against heavy odds and overwhelming enemy strength and sacrificed their lives.

Brig Rajinder Singh laid down his life on October 27, 1947, stalling the advance of the Pakistan army towards Kashmir. Brig Rajinder Singh was awarded Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) posthumously. He was the first recipient of independent India's gallantry award Maha Vir Chakra.
