Chandigarh, September 27

Safai karamcharis in the city will go on strike tomorrow in support of their long-pending demands.

The Safai Karamchari Union and the MC held a meeting late this evening. While Mayor Arun Sood claimed that the safai karamacharis had called off their strike scheduled for tomorrow, union president Shyam Lal Ghawri said since there was nothing in writing, they would go on strike and hold a protest outside the MC office tomorrow. At the meeting, the MC gave an assurance to the safai karamcharis regarding their demands. There are 4,000 safai karamcharis, including contractual staff.

Their key demands include regularisation of the services of 134 sanitation workers, employment to kin of deceased workers on compassionate grounds and promotion of literate sanitation workers to the post of clerk.
