Mercury dips with first winter rain

Lightening and thunder preceded by heavy showers marked the first rain this winter season as the city recorded 33.2 mm of rainfall. There was a dip in day and night temperatures and the Met Department predicted heavy rains over the next two days.

The downpour which increased towards the evening not only disrupted the power supply, water logging was also reported from low-lying areas and at rotaries. The sudden dip in the temperature saw city residents pulling out their winter clothings.

Today’s rain brought down the day’s temperature to 15.2 degree Celsius from yesterday’s 24.3 degree Celsius, seven notches below the normal.

Met department director Surinder Pal Singh said that the reason of thundershowers along with lighting was the western disturbances along with easterly waves. He said that the moderate rain would continue over the next two days which would further dip the minimum temperature. He said as per the records there was 33.6 mm less rain this time in winters.

As per the forecast, there will be thundershowers and generally cloudy sky and maximum temperature will be 16 degree Celsius and minimum will be 9 degree Celsius.

the weather officials said the temperature was likely to plummet further. The city today recorded a maximum temperature of 15.2 degrees Celsius which is seven notches below the normal and minimum temperature of 8.7 degree Celsius which is two notches above the normal. Due to the heavy rain there is water logging at few points in the city.
