Ropar, March 5

Even as a number of villages across the state are reeling under water shortage due to snapping of power to waterworks by the PSPCL, the Bahadurpur village panchayat has decided to provide 24-hour drinking water to its residents.

At present, the panchayat is supplying water every morning and evening for two hours against a lump sum amount of Rs 150 per household. The village has 93 water connections.

This is not the first time that the village has set an example of development with the help of local residents. Earlier, it got the Nirmal Gram Puraskar from the Centre in April 2011 for its clean streets and underground sewerage. An NRI, Dilbar Singh, supplies bio gas from his dairy farm to all houses in the village free of cost for six hours every day.

Prem Singh, sarpanch, said the panchayat started managing the water supply scheme set up by the state with the help of World Bank in August 2013. A seven-member committee comprising was formed to look after it.

He said since then the villagers had been getting water supply twice a day against a lump sum amount. But this led to wastage as there was no limit on drawing water during the supply hours, he said.

To check this, it was decided to install water meters so that people pay according to their usage. In lieu of it, they would get 24-hour water supply, Prem Singh said.

The work of installing the meters would be completed within the next few days after which round-the-clock water supply would be started, said Prem Singh.
