Manali, May 20

The 13,050 feet high Rohtang Pass, the main tourist attraction, will be thrown open to tourists from tomorrow as the snow-clearance work has been completed.

A team of officials today visited Rohtang and found basic facilities, including parking and toilets, in place. The road has been opened only up to Marhi, about 35 km from Manali.

Manali Deputy Superintendent of Police Puneet Raghu said adequate parking space had been made available at Rohtang after clearing the snow. “The traffic police have been deployed at various places between Manali and Rohtang for smooth traffic movement. The vehicles having valid permits can now go right up to Rohtang from tomorrow,” he added.

Meanwhile, the tourism industry heaved a sigh of relief today. Unable to see the snow, the tourists would often return disappointed. Now, 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles will be permitted to go to Rohtang on a first come-first serve basis. Eco-friendly toilets have been set up.
