Road blocked over dry water channel

Jind, July 24

Residents of Igrah village in the district blocked the Jind-Bhiwani highway in protest against the dried irrigation ‘rajbah’ (water channel). The protesters said that there was no water in the channel for the past nearly 10 years and they had informed the authorities several times but to no avail.

Sultan Singh, a resident of the village, said the government was not paying attention towards their long-pending demand and it was having an adverse impact over 4,000 acres of land in the village.

Another villager, Naveen Kumar said: “We have written to the Chief Minister, the Prime Minister and the district administration many times, but they did not take the matter seriously.”

The protesters alleged that the water was not reaching their village due to the negligence of the department concerned.

On getting information, the police and officials of the department reached the spot and assured the villagers that the water supply would be resumed shortly.

Banarsi Dass, Executive Engineer, Jind division: said: “We have noticed the negligence of a junior engineer for not taking the matter seriously. We have replaced him immediately. Water will be released in the channel soon.”—OC
