Rewari, April 29

The gram panchayat of Suma Khera has decided to conduct makeshift classes for girls on the Government Primary School campus of the village till the Education Department upgrades the school. The panchayat has also roped in some educated villagers to take the classes from classes VI to X.

“We cannot wait for long for the government’’s decision to upgrade the school, so the panchayat has resolved to make temporary arrangement to organise classes, as the prevailing situation is resulting in adverse effect on the study of over 100 students from Suma Khera and Katopuri villages,” said Harvinder, husband of Suma village sarpanch Urmila.

He said the decision had been taken unanimously keeping in view the safety of the girls, as they could not send them to Lala village school after a minor girl was kidnapped and raped en route to the school there on April 18. Harvinder said some educated boys and girls had come forward to teach the students till the government did not accept their demand. The village school had 12 classrooms and several had been lying vacate for a long time, he said. – TNS
