Dehradun, April 20

Terming yesterday’s Chopal bus tragedy as one of the most shocking road mishaps, residents of Jaunsar Bavar area staged a demonstration outside the Regional Transport Office here today.

They sought the start of a government bus service in the Jaunsar Bavar area. They alleged the present private bus service that plied in the area did not adhere to the fitness rule and were overloaded with passengers. One of the protesters, Virendra Tomar, held private buses must be banned from plying in Jaunsar Bavar and replaced with government buses.

He said the overloading of private buses was a common feature which often led to mishaps. He said the Shimla bus tragedy was also the result of overloading as the ill-fated bus that had a capacity of 35 passengers was carrying 47 instead. — TNS
