Dehradun, May 24

Councillors, BJP workers and city residents held a demonstration at the Jal Sansthan office here today against the shortage of potable water in several colonies.

The protesters gathered at the Jal Sansthan office on the Rajpur road and raised slogans against the acute water shortage. They said several memorandums demanding adequate potable water supply had been submitted to officials but no corrective measures had been taken.

Protesters said the shortage of potable water had become a perennial problem in Hathibarkala, Salawala, Brijlok Colony, Inderlok Colony, and adjoining colonies of the region.

Residents were forced to traverse several kilometres to get a bucket full of water. Erratic power supply was also one of the reasons for water shortage in the region, they alleged.

Residents said they were given false assurances by Jal Sansthan officials that work to lay water pipelines and set up new tube wells in the affected areas would be started soon. The state Potable Water Department had not taken any effective steps to overcome the shortage of potable water in the affected colonies of the city, the residents lamented.

Bhupinder Kaithat, Mohan Singh, Satyendra Kumar, Puja Devi, Sunita and Priyanka were among the protesters.
