Jind, September 26

A 19-year-old Dalit girl, allegedly raped by her maternal uncle, attempted suicide outside the house of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shashank Anand here today.

A traffic policeman deployed nearby admitted her to the Civil Hospital. Her condition is said to be stable. The accused, Karan Singh (35), was arrested today. A native of Kaithal district, she has been staying at her maternal house in Jind’s Amarheri village for 10 years. She is a student of Class 10.

She alleged her uncle had been raping her for several months after giving her some sedatives.

In her statement to the police, she said she had filed a complaint at a women’s police station a month ago, but the matter was not pursued because the panchayat intervened.

Anand said, “The girl has alleged her grandparents were aware of her ordeal, but never stopped Karan.”

The victim’s mother met the police and denied her daughter’s claim, the SSP said. “Karan allegedly tried to rape her on Sunday night, but she managed to escape and took shelter in the house of the sarpanch,” he said.

The sarpanch urged her to approach the police.

The girl today met Exempted Assistant Sub-Inspector (EASI) Manoj Kumar deployed near the SSP’s house and sought a meeting with the official. The EASI told her the SSP was in his office.

SSP said, “Instead of going to the SSP’s office, the victim handed over a paper (probably a suicide note) to the EASI and tried to kill herself. The policeman foiled her bid and took her to hospital.

Civil Hospital doctors have referred her to the PGIMS, Rohtak, Anand said.

“The police will record her statement in the presence of the Duty Magistrate and register a case against her uncle,” he added.
