Punjab Congress vice-president and legislator from Guruharsahai Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi today welcomed appointments of Capt Amarinder Singh as the PPCC president and Ambika Soni as the chief of the state campaign committee for 2017 elections.

He said Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi made these appointments “at the most opportune time”.

“This decision has sent a wave of happiness among Congress cadre in Punjab. The party will stand united like a rock to face the slanderous campaign of the Akali-BJP combine and expose them. The Aam Admi Party, an inexperienced, unprincipled party, is a non-entity in the state and will be exposed in front of the people for its double standards and directionless policies,” he said.

He said the people of Punjab had unflinching faith in the leadership of Amarinder Singh, who provided a corruption-free government in the state from 2002 to 2007.

“People were longing for Amarinder Singh to take over the reins of the party (in the state). He is the only leader in Punjab who the Akalis fear. His elevation at this juncture will strengthen the party line to see Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Minister,” Sodhi said.

He also hailed Ambika for her vast parliamentary and administrative experience saying the state unit would gain from her. State unit vice-president Kewal S Dhillon also thanked the Congress leadership for the move saying it would “turn the tide in Congress’ favour”. — TNS
