Overnight heavy rainfall in Munsiyari and Dharchula falling under Pithoragarh district has caused extensive damage to property. A woman lost a life when she fell in a deep gorge after a boulder fell on her near Madkot in Munsiyari.
According to reports, a dam in Seraghat (Danibagar) has also suffered extensive damage.
Reports say that debris and muck that got washed in the rainwater has entered several houses and farm land. A bridge connecting Seraghat and Seragaon in Munsiyari has been damaged, while another bridge that was under construction in Basantkot village too has been damaged. All the approach roads to the villages are blocked due to settling of debris and muck. In Madkot village, surging rain water entered the market causing extensive damage.
In Munsiyari all the schools have been declared shut. Secretary Disaster Management Amit Negi said that the department was closely monitoring the situation. “There has been damage to property in Munsiyari and Dharchula to government and private property,” he said.
In all, four roads have been blocked due to debris in the district.
According to reports, due to bad weather a group of 31 Mansarovar yatra pilgrims are also stranded in Pithoragarh as the helicopter that was to take them to Gunji could not take off due to inclement weather. They are expected to leave for Gunji on Tuesday, in case the weather clears.
Meanwhile Rishikesh-Gangorti route is open for big and small vehicles, while the Yamunotri route has been blocked vehicles due to recurring landslides at Ojri Dabarkot.
The Uttarakhand weather department has forecasted severe weather conditions in several parts of Uttarakhand for July 2 and July 3 has advised the commuters and pilgrims (especially along Mansarovar Yatra route) to be very cautious and coordinate closely with State Govt. authorities.
