Railway Minister Prabhu to open projects tomorrow

The third linen laundry of the Northern Railway in the region, set up at the Chandigarh railway station, will be inaugurated by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday. He will also inaugurate various projects of Punjab and Haryana from the city railway station.

Northern Railway General Manager AK Puthia visited the station today to review the preparations for the minister’s visit. He said besides the laundry, the minister will also inaugurate a new railway line from Jind to Sonepat.

The laundry has been set up after a large number of complaints were received from passengers regarding unclean linen being provided to them during journeys.

The laundry, set up at a cost of Rs 1 crore, will be used for washing two tonnes of cloth, including bedsheets, pillow covers, hand towels, bathroom towels and blankets, in a shift of eight hours.

Prabhu is expected to meet the chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana regarding various railway projects hanging fire for long. He will also review work on various railway projects . During the inspection, a few employees who travel by the Nangal-Chandigarh train daily, requested the GM to increase the number of coaches.  On complaints about missing LCD screens in Shatabdis, the GM said an inquiry would be held. 

Restricted entry for passengers tomorrow

  • Passengers will not be allowed to enter from the main entrance during the event on Sunday (from 2.30 pm onwards). They will have to enter through escalators that connect all platforms from the Chandigarh side.
  • Traffic will be diverted from the main entrance 
  • Exclusive lanes will be earmarked for those coming to attend the event.

WiFi at station from July 15 

  • The GM inspected the work on platform number 6. He said construction work on platform numbers 7 and 8 would start after the “double lining” work,  
  • Ambala Divisional Manager Dinesh Kumar said by July 15, the WiFi project would become operational at the Chandigarh railway station.
