A gang of criminals reportedly attacked a police team at Jaurian village late last night following which a head constable was critically injured.

The injured, Gurmeet Singh, was part of the team that went to the village falling under Dera Baba Nanak police station for investigating a case when he was attacked with sharp weapons. He was admitted to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar.

Daljinder Singh Dhillon, SSP, claimed that no such attack took place, but an FIR registered on the matter belied his claim.

The FIR states that the police team that had gone to Jaurian village was attacked with an intention to murder with sharp weapons following which Gurmeet Singh was injured.

The police have booked 10 persons, including Amarjot Singh, his brother Avtar Singh, Raman and Gora, under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and other sections of the IPC and the Arms Act. The case has been registered on a complaint by Paramjit Singh, SHO, who was leading the police team.

Sources claimed the brothers had a criminal record and they were facing at least 12 cases for various offences.

They said Batala was a politically active town where several senior SAD leaders ruled the roost in their capacity as halqa incharge. A former Cabinet minister alleged: “Criminals get political patronage from Akali leaders. This being an election year, the leaders are ensuring that their men have a free run. That is why criminals do not think twice when it comes to attacking the men in uniform.”
