Schoolgirl raped, murdered

Gurdaspur, December 20

A Class IX student was allegedly raped and murdered by some persons in the Babri bypass area, 5 km from here, last night.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Toor confirmed that the girl was raped before being strangulated to death.

He said a special investigation team (SIT), comprising Superintendent of Police (D) JS Kainth, Deputy Superintendent of Police (D) Kuldeep Singh, the SHO of the Sadar police station and the in charge of the CIA cell, has been formed to look into the incident.

A case under Sections 376, 511 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against unidentified persons at the Sadar police station.

A post-mortem on the victim’s body was conducted at the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital today.

Local Congress leaders have condemned the incident alleging breakdown of the law and order machinery in the district.
