Long queues of people wanting to exchange/deposit the old currency notes were witnessed outside banks today. The situation was no better outside ATMs, with most of the money dispensing machines running out of cash within no time.

People in large numbers tried to enter Co-operative Bank in Kaptan Nagar and broke its door. The police had to be called to control the situation. A woman suffered injuries as the door broke. The banks that opened after a day today faced currency crunch. Many branches ran dry in the morning. They received the cash in the afternoon, said a bank employee.

“The old notes amounting to Rs 2,900 crore were deposited in the banks in the last five days and about 110 crore has been exchanged,” said, Rakesh Verma, Lead District Manager, Panipat. An amount of Rs 23 crore was received today. The situation will be in control in the next two-three days, he added.
