Punjabi University, GNDU vice-chancellors quit

Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh and Guru Nanak Dev University Vice-Chancellor Prof Ajaib Singh Brar have resigned from their posts.

Jaspal Singh met Governor VP Badnore in Chandigarh on Tuesday evening and put in his papers while Brar submitted his resignation today.

Brar said it was purely due to family circumstances that he requested the Governor to relieve him by March 31 as his only son was not keeping well. He was given an extension till July 2018

Jaspal Singh had joined Punjabi University on December 11, 2007 and his term was later extended in 2010 till December 11, 2013.

He was then given an extension till December 11, 2015. He again got a three-year extension in 2015.

Had he completed his three-year term, he would have equalled the 11-year term of Kirpal Singh Narang, the second V-C of Punjabi University, which is the longest term served by a V-C of this university. 

While Jaspal Singh could not be contacted, sources said the formalities would be completed in the next two to three days. Meanwhile, the V-C is headed for New Delhi. 

Brar was Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar since 15th July, 2009. Prior to joining as Vice-Chancellor of this University, he was the Vice-Chancellor at the University of Lucknow.

He has a vast experience of working in the field of education, research at prestigious National and International Institutes in various capacities.

Brar has worked in the fields of catalysis, Mossbauer Spectroscopy, Photochemistry and in the field of NMR Spectroscopy of Polymers.

He has international recognition in these fields.

Brar joined IIT Delhi as Assistant Professor of Chemistry in 1982 and rose to the position of Professor (Higher Academic Grade - HAG).

He had also been Joint Professor, Centre for Polymer Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi.

Brar did his B.Sc. from Faridkot, Punjab in 1968 and M.Sc. from Punjabi University, Patiala in 1970. He did his Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1977.
