Thirty-year-old Punjab Police Constable Gurwinder Singh was reportedly shot dead in cold blood by addicts near Mehma Sarja village this afternoon over “sharing of booty”. His body was found in a pool of blood.

Having joined the police in 2011, he was stationed at the Nehianwala police station for the past two months. Before that, he was with the PCR, Bathinda. He is survived by his parents, wife and a five-year-old son.

SSP Swapan Sharma said Gurwinder left home with his neighbour Daljeet Gill at 8 am. While on way to Mehma Sarja village, they entered into an altercation. “What transpired is yet to be ascertained; it could be money or something else,” the SSP said. A case of murder has been registered against Gill, who has been arrested. The interrogation of seven more persons is on.

The SSP said Gurwinder was addicted to opium but had stopped its use two months ago. Sources said the constable, in mufti, had gone to collect a consignment of drugs from an acquaintance when an altercation took place and he was shot twice.

The killers fled in his Nissan Micra, which overturned near Goniana Kalan. When a passerby approached the injured occupants, he was forced to hand over his car keys at gunpoint. The killers fled in his Maruti car.
