Punjab cop gets 14-year jail for raping minor daughter

A local court today awarded 14-year jail term to a head constable of the Punjab Police for raping his minor daughter. A fine of Rs 1.02 lakh has been imposed on the convict.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge sent Ajit Singh (44) to jail for 14 years for raping his 13-year-old daughter, a Class VIII student.

In her complaint, the victim had alleged that her father had started raping her after death of her mother in an accident in 2011. The victim had experienced the trauma for more than a year, the police had said. Ajit Singh had remarried. The matter had come to light when the victim’s stepmother had arranged a meeting between the girl and her aunt. The victim told her aunt about the trauma she was going through. Her aunt approached a Panchkula-based NGO, which informed the police then. 

A case against Ajit Singh was registered at the Phase XI police station on February 28, 2015, under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC The charge under Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, was also slapped on the accused.

The accused, who hailed from Hoshiarpur, was posted at the Punjab Police Commando Complex in Mohali then and the family was residing at the Police Colony in Sector 66.
