PU students for four-wheeler-free campus

More than 50 per cent Panjab University students are in favour of a four-wheeler-free campus. A referendum in this regard was conducted by the university during the Panjab University Campus Student Council elections held last week.

The authorities had sought the students’ opinion on whether or not their four-wheelers should be allowed to enter the academic areas of the North and South campus at Sector 14 and Sector 25, respectively.

As many as 53.2 per cent (3,315 students) voted in favour of a ban on students’ vehicles while 46.8 per cent (2,916 students) voted in favour of entry of students’ vehicles in the academic areas of the North campus.

As many as 51.3 per cent (3,200 students) voted in favour of a ban on students’ vehicles while 48.7 per cent (3,034 students) voted in favour of entry of students vehicles in the academic areas of the South campus at Sector 25.

PU Dean Students Welfare Navdeep Goyal said the referendum would help resolve the parking problem in the university. The PU Registrar, Col GS Chadha (retd), said the university was considering the options of e-rikshaws and bus shuttle service inside the campus. e-rickshaws would be available at Gate numbers 1, 2 and 3.

A survey conducted earlier had revealed that nearly 23,000 vehicles enter the main campus of the university in Sector 14 daily.
