Chandigarh, February 13

Panjab University’s community radio station, Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz, celebrated its fifth anniversary at the School of Communication Studies (SCS) today.

National Award winning actress Baljinder Kaur, visually impaired martial arts expert Rashpal Kaur and DSP (Cyber cell) Rashmi Yadav were the special guests for the occasion.

The radio station was inaugurated on February 13, 2011. Incidentally, the day was declared as World Radio Day by UNESCO in 2012. Every year, Radio Jyotirgamaya holds twin celebrations on this day in the presence of faculty, students and members of the community.

A special interview with Rashpal Kaur was also conducted for the programme, ‘Hamari Beti’. A special attraction as part of the fifth anniversary celebrations was a ‘Wall of Kindness’ which was set up on the radio premises. Volunteers donated reusable clothes for the Wall.

Members of the community, including little children, were free to walk into the radio station and pick up clothes of their choice. They were also treated with cake and balloons.

The radio witnessed an overwhelming response to the project and people were seen walking in and out of the station throughout the day to donate and take the clothes.

The coordinator of the radio station and chairperson of the School of Communication Studies, Jayanth N Pethkar, thanked the community for their contribution to the ‘Wall of Kindness’. In the past, the radio station volunteers have even recorded seven audio books for visually impaired students.

Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz is available across the range of 10 km radius and runs 10 hours of programming every day. The programmes cater to members of the community across all age groups, interests and social strata.
