Several houses in Gazivali village in the Shyampur area of Haridwar district were submerged after a part of the East Ganga canal caved in today morning. The canal water flooded the village, which falls on the Nazibabad-Haridwar National Highway (NH-74).

The vehicular traffic on the stretch came to a halt. Within half an hour, an administrative team led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and the District Disaster Management personnel arrived at the village.

SDM Pratyush Singh said villagers were evacuated to safer places and water was being pumped out with machines. A team of flood-disaster control experts was sent to repair the damaged Ganga canal portion. The State Disaster Response Force personnel, Jal Police, Irrigation Department and Traffic police were working on a war footing.

“We hope that traffic on the national highway will be restored by the evening. However, no loss of life has been reported as villagers were provided immediate rescue and relief aid. Farmers who suffered crop loss will be compensated as per the disaster policy norms,” the SDM added.
