Dehradun, February 10

The state government is looking at the possibility of linking the silk development project with other livelihood schemes. Chief Minister Harish Rawat said this after unveiling a silk reeling and ultra modern air drier unit constructed under the Catalytic Development and National Rural Development Project at the Selaqui Growth Centre, near Dehradun, yesterday.

He commended the efforts of the Uttarakhand Silk Development Board in establishing the silk reeling and ultra modern air drier unit at the Selaqui Growth Centre as farmers involved in silk production would benefit from it.

He announced a motivational amount for 60 committees involved in silk production in the state. He said with the new technology available, the focus now should be on increasing the silk cocoon production. He hoped that the number of farmers benefiting from silk production would increase from 6,000 to 12,000. He also announced an incentive to the farmers growing mulberry and other trees needed to feed silkworms in the state.
