The Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided not to give approval to the Jalandhar-based Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) to admit MBBS students in the upcoming academic session. The private college has 150 MBBS seats.

Sources said the decision was taken at the MCI’s Executive Committee meeting held in March. The minutes of the meeting were released yesterday.

The college was refused permission after an inspection — held in March – found serious deficiencies in terms of the staff strength, infrastructure and human resources.

As per the inspection report, there was 8.23% (7 out of 85) shortage of resident doctors in the college. It was also found that the outpatient department (OPD) of the college hospital had a common injection room for male and female patients.

The inspection team noted that there were no demonstration rooms in the wards of the tuberculosis and chest, psychiatry, and skin departments. Despite having the status of a medical college, PIMS’s casualty ward did not have a ventilator, it was found.

Following the submission of the report, the Executive Committee decided to give one month to the institution to rectify the deficiencies and submit the compliance report to the MCI.

PIMS had also been refused permission to admit students in 2013-14.
