Chandigarh, August 21

A senior resident on duty in Medical Emergency Ward No. 4 at the PGI was allegedly slapped by the son of a patient here today.

According to eyewitnesses, Gurdial Singh, a resident of Patiala, slapped the resident doctor when he came to see his mother this afternoon. Gurdial Singh’s mother Swatantra Kumari (68) was admitted to Emergency last night.

“Despite repeated requests to several doctors, nursing and other staff on duty, no one came to attend to my mother till this morning,” said a distraught Gurdial.

A security officer on duty said Gurdial slapped the doctor in a fit of rage. “He was not listening to what I was trying to tell him about the condition of my mother,” the security guard quoted Gurdial as having said.

The security officer said there was a huge rush of patients in Emergency last night and only a few doctors due to which attendants of several patients were seen requesting the doctors to see their patients, but to no avail.
