With the sewage treatment plant (STP) of Parwanoo Municipal Committee (MC) failing to treat municipal waste appropriately the officials of the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has slapped notice on the MC to put in place a proper waste disposal system.

Since the water samples of treated waste failed to conform to the laid-down norms, the MC authorities have been directed to set up a proper STP to cater to the entire MC area. The issue came to fore after the officials of the Haryana Government had pointed out in an inter-state meeting that the partially treated sewage waste of Parwanoo town was contaminating their water bodies.

The town has witnessed an increase in its population in the last over a decade owing to the investment by investors while its sewage disposal mechanism has not been upgraded vis-à-vis rise in the population.

It was learnt that sewage from sectors 1, 2 and 4, Taksal village and Dagger in Parwanoo was disposed into the Sukhna Nullah while the waste from sectors 5 and 6 was dumped into Kaushalya river.

The Sukhna Nullah confluences into the Ghaggar near Surajpur opposite the Kaushlaya Dam which supplies drinking water to Haryana.

The officials of the SPCB had then undertaken a study to assess waste disposal mechanism of various bordering towns, including Parwanoo. The study pointed out that since the levels of biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand in the Sukhna Nullah were not in keeping with the laid-down norms the treatment plant was found lacking. These norms measure the water quality and indicate whether the treatment plant is working appropriately.

An official of the SPCB confirmed that the Parwanoo MC was served a notice.
