Padma Shri for PGI Director

CHANDIGARH: The PGIMER Director, Dr YK Chawla, will be conferred Padma Shri (distinguished work) on Republic Day.

The PGIMER Director, Dr YK Chawla, will be conferred Padma Shri (distinguished work) on Republic Day. Dr Chawla is known for his pivotal role in introducing the course of DM Hepatology at the PGIMER.

However, none of five names, recommended by the Chandigarh Administration, figured on the list of awardees issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs today.

Dr Chawla pursued MBBS and MD from Jabalpur Medical College. He further studied DM Gastroenterology at AIIMS, New Delhi. He joined the PGIMER in 1983 as a lecturer. He was chosen as director of the institute in 2011.

Dr Chawla is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (Australia), Hepatology International (Japan), Liver International (Denmark), Digestive Disease and Science (US) and Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology (India). He is also an Advisory Board Member of the Annals of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India).

Then UT Administrator Shivraj Patil had recommended the name of Dr D Behera, Head Department of Pulmonary Medicine, PGI; and Dr BS Chavan, Head, Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32; RK Saboo, former president of Rotary International, Pandit Yashpaul, a singer and Satnam Namita Singh, an architect from city, for the Padma awards.
