Notices to SAD, Cong for poll code violation

Mohali: Hosting dinner parties without permission put the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Congress in trouble here on Monday. Supporters of both parties hosted dinners at different private hotels last night. According to Anuprita Johal, Returning Officer-cum-SDM, complaints in this regard were received and the officials concerned raided the venues.

“As we did not find candidates of the parties there, we added the cost of dinner to the election expense of the parties”, said the RO, adding that notices in this regard had been sent to both  parties.

People fed up with SAD-BJP govt: Dhillon

Dera Bassi: Deepinder Singh Dhillon, Congress candidate from Dera Bassi, said there was no SAD-BJP wave in the constituency rather it was anti-incumbency against the ruling alliance.

At a press conference here, Dhillon said even people in Zirakpur would reject ruling alliance candidate NK Sharma where he had his base. Taking a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), he said it stood exposed in the wake of allegations of bribery and had no base in the state.

“People of Punjab are fed up with non-governance, corruption and the mafia culture prevailing in the state and want a change in the political set-up,” the Congress leader said.

On the revolt within the Congress against the allocation of party ticket to him, Dhillon said, “It was the decision of the party high command. Talks are on to pacify the opponents and I am sure that all will support the party decision.”

On the occasion, Bhoom Singh Rana, state general secretary of the legal cell of AAP, along with other party workers, extended support to Dhillon.

Welcoming them into the party fold, Dhillon said soon Dera Bassi would be made an “AAP-free” town as a number of other party leaders were in touch with the Congress. He added that days of the SAD-BJP alliance were numbered.

Flying squad impounds NK Sharma’s car

Dera Bassi: A team of the flying squad impounded an Innova car ( PB 65-Z-7755) being used for canvassing for Assembly elections.

Occupants of the car have been charged with violating the model code of conduct. According to sources, the car belongs to Dera Bassi MLA NK Sharma and was being used by his party supporters for canvassing without taking prior permission from the Returning Officer.

Ruhi Dugg, SDM-cum-Returning Officer, said the car was being used without permission. “Hence, we impounded the car,” she added. She further said the impounded vehicle could not be used further for canvassing.
