Overloaded transport carriers continue to ply unchecked on the highway at the inter-state Kandwal barrier in the absence of weighing bridge. Heavily loaded vehicles are not only damaging road surface and polluting the environment, but also causing loss to the state exchequer.

The HP High Court while disposing public interest litigation in April 2007, had ordered the Principal Secretary, Transport, and Excise and Taxation Department, to install weighing bridges at all entry points (inter-state barriers) in the state to check overloaded vehicles.

Official sources said the state government had acquired private land for installing weighing bridge at the Kandwal barrier in 2008, but the land owner had moved the High Court which after hearing the petition had referred the case to SDM, Nurpur.

After hearing the pleas of both parties, the SDM gave the decision in favour of the Regional Transport Authority, which is likely to get possession in the next month.
