Over 35,000 children to be administered polio drops

The first round of Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme began today with the administration of polio drops to children of slum areas at Mubarikpur near Dera Bassi.

Nodal officer Bhupinder Singh Dahri said around 35,982 children up to five years of age would be administered polio drops under the pulse polio campaign, which began from May 29.

As many as 145 teams have been constituted and 28 trained supervisors have been deployed to man the polio booths and also undertake door-to-door campaign.

Mohinder Singh, Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, said the campaign would continue for another two days (May 30 and 31) by way of house-to-house activity to trace and administer polio drops to the children left out on the first day of the round.

The Senior Medical Officer under the guidance of Neelam Bhardwaj, Chief Medical Officer, Mohali, launched the programme by administering polio drops this morning to newborn and other infants at Dera Bassi. The Senior Medical Officer said about 36,000 children in the age group of 0-5 would be covered in three days through door-to-door campaign for the eradication of pulse polio. He said apart from schools and other localities, polio booths would also be set up at bus stops and other public places. — OC
