Former DGP KPS Gill, known for his successful fight against the militants, is unfazed at being declared a “tankhaiya” (one who is guilty of religious misconduct) along with Lt Gen KS Brar (retd) by the Sarbat Khalsa today.

Terming the organisers as a “bunch of thugs”, Gill said the organisers were “tankhaiyas” themselves as they had done the greatest harm to the Sikh religion and the state.

The Sarbat Khalsa, which has no approval of the Akal Takht, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee or the state government, labelled Gill a “tankhaiya” today accusing him of initiating polices that led to killing of “innocent” Sikh youths during the dark days of terrorism.

Talking to The Tribune on the phone, Gill said, “They are a bunch of thugs. They are tankhaiyas themselves as they have done the greatest harm to Sikhism. These persons were actually the real “anti-Sikh” of all time.”

“The Supreme Court is hearing a petition seeking a ban on ‘sardar’ jokes. I feel these persons are bigger jokes. These persons have no power or authority to make such announcements,” he said.

Gill also questioned the motive of the organisers terming it a fake movement, “It is a fake movement. The real aim of the organisers is political. They want to wrest political power in the state and are using religion to achieve their target.

Though Brar could not be contacted for his reaction, Gill sought to defend him by saying that “he did his duty as a uniformed officer. He did his best.”On the role of the police, Gill said the police did well to maintain calm and peace today.
