Residents of Ghallu village of Fazilka district are angry as there has been little water for irrigation and drinking purposes for the last few months. The standing crops are dying for want of water.

Village sarpanch Sohan Lal has alleged the Arniwala minor, which supplies water to the village, has been almost dry for some time. The minor irrigates about 6,000 acres of Ghallu village.

In the absence of canal-based drinking water supply, the waterworks of the village has also run out of water, resulting in shortage of potable water.

The villagers said that the reverse osmosis (RO) system had also been lying defunct for the last over six months. “Residents have to go to nearby areas to fetch water,” said the sarpanch. The irked residents have threatened to desert the village. “There is no point in living here when the government can’t even provide us with the basic amenities,” said villagers Nihal Chand, Variam Chand and Ram Chander.

Gurpreet Singh, Executive Engineer, Water Supply and Sanitation, said he would look into the matter.
