Representatives of various social outfits, political parties, khaps, gram panchayats and residents of nearby villages gathered at Surheti village today to pay homage to Major Amit Deswal, who was killed in a gun battle with militants in Manipur on April 13. However, no local administrative official arrived in the village to pay tributes to the martyr.
“By not sending any officer to the village for paying tribute to Amit, the district administration has showed an insensitive attitude towards the family of the martyr, who laid down his life for the nation,” said Dharmender.
Ankit Deswal, Amit’s younger brother, told The Tribune that generally the authority reached out to the bereaved families of the martyrs, but it was unfortunate that no administrative official approached them ever since the cremation of his brother.
“Even officials at the DC’s office did not cooperate with us when I and an Army officer went there on Friday to fulfil some paper formalities. Moreover, they advised us to visit the office again on Monday for a simple task,” he said.
Earlier, Cooperative Minister Vikram Singh Yadav and HPCC chief Ashok Tanwar paid tributes to the martyr..
Capt Om Prakash, on behalf of the village, submitted a memorandum to the minister, seeking of a park, a community centre and a women’s college in the village after Amit’s name, Class I job and aid of Rs 2 crore to his widow.
Anita Yadav, Jhajjar DC, said, “Several officers attended the last rites of Major Amit Deswal, but we did not have any information about the condolence meeting. We have full sympathy with the bereaved family.”
