A team of National Commission for Women led by Rekha Sharma, member, today visited Dimana village in the Shillai sub-division of the Sirmaur district and interacted with about nine families whose daughters have been married in Haryana.

While addressing media persons at Nahan, she said the area lacked good roads and development. Provision of more employment avenues could help remove the scourge of poverty which was visible in the villages. She said if the people had jobs they would face lesser hardships. This was especially significant for the girls.

She said it was surprising to know that several families, who had married their daughters in Haryana, were not even aware of their whereabouts. This was intriguing. She alleged that it appears that some people exploited the poverty-ridden people of the area though it could not be ascertained that the girls were married for any monetary consideration.

She said the people needed to be educated about verifying the identity of such grooms through their Aadhar card and similar identification modes. She also advised the people to ensure compulsory registration of the marriage of their daughters which, she explained, was a simple procedure.

A report would be submitted by the five-member committee to the NCW which will take further view on the issue of alleged trafficking of women in this area. SDM Shillai Girish Saklani was also present on the occasion.
