Chandigarh, February 6

The uncle and mother of a Sector 35 girl were awarded four and three years of rigorous imprisonment, respectively, for her sexual harassment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3,500 on the mother and Rs 6,500 on the uncle (masad).

The girl, who was a minor at the time of the incident, had complained to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Chandigarh, in 2014 alleging that in January 2011 on Lohri, her uncle tried to make physical advances towards her. When she reported the matter to her mother, the latter ignored her, saying he was like her father.

She alleged that similar incidents happened in 2012 and once in 2013 during family gatherings. Her mother scolded her whenever she reported the matter to her. Her mother argued that the man provided them basic amenities and she should stop complaining against him.

The victim alleged that on September 30, 2014, her uncle told her he had a DVD of her mother’s porn video and asked her to make physical relations with her failing which he would make it public. When she confronted her mother regarding the DVD, she beat her up.

The victim’s brother came to her rescue when she narrated the incidents to him. The messages exchanged between the two convicts in which it was stated that the victim’s mother should “lure her so that she may also indulge in such activities with him” were also part of the case.
