Mohali, March 27

The Mohali police were left red-faced as the local court reprimanded it for asking the police remand of Seerat again for the third time here today. Questioning the police about its output in the Aikom murder case, the court asked the officials what information they have managed to extract from the accused (Seerat) during her remand in the police custody for eight days and what information they (the police) intended to elicit now.

Notably, the court had sent Seerat under the police remand twice (two days and six days).

Denying the police request for the extension of Seerat’s police remand for five days more, the court sent her to 14-day judicial custody. The police today took plea that they were yet to arrest the rest two accused in the case so they wanted extension of Seerat’s police remand.

When the court asked the police about their output of investigation so far in the case, the police officials could not give any satisfactory reply.

‘My children are not safe at my in-laws’ house’: Seerat

During Monday’s court proceedings, Seerat requested the court to grant custody of her two children - Gurniwas Singh (11) and Hamaira (5) - to her sister. “My children are not safe at my in-laws’ house. Nobody from my in-laws had even come to see my children when they were born,” said Seerat in the court while pleading granting of her children custody to her sister. The court did not entertain the application granting the custody of her children to her sister.

Weapon used in the crime was illegal: SSP

The pistol used in the crime was illegal, said Kuldip Singh Chahal, Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police, here. “It (the pistol) was an illegal weapon, which the couple used to carry with them while their trips to out of the town,” said the SSP. On being asked about development in the case, the SSP said investigations were on. “Our Special Investigative Team (SIT) is likely to submit its report in a day or two,” said SSP Chahal.

Sarpanches of four villages meet Mohali SSP

Meanwhile, a delegation, including sarpanches of four villages, including New Abbal Khurana and Old Abbal Khurana villages met Mohali SSP KS Chahal in support of Seerat’s brother Vinay Partap Singh, also an accused in the case. “We knew Vinay Partap for over past two decades and we know he is innocent,” claimed the members of the delegation, claiming that a CCTV footage (which they claimed to have shown to the authorities) clearly shows that Vinay Partap was somewhere else in Chandigarh at the time of the incident. Demanding a high-level inquiry in the case, the delegation demanded clearance of Vinay Partap’s name from the FIR in this connection.
