Terming Ramazan as a means to practice piousness and control cravings, All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said today that Islam was the only religion which laid emphasis on providing equitable rights to women besides men.

He, however, added that despite elaborate explanations on the subject, women rights in general, and their property rights and especially share from their parental property in particular, were being ignored.

Mirwaiz stated this while delivering a religious sermon at the Dastgeer Sahib shrine in the Khanyar area of the downtown. Today is also the death anniversary of Umul-al-Moomineen Hazrat Khadijah, the first wife of Prophet Mohammad, a statement from the Hurriyat said.

Urging women not to remain silent and seek their rights, the APHC chairman said respecting these rights in view of the Koranic injunction was a necessity for every Muslim. Paying tributes to Hazrat Khadija, Mirwaiz recalled her contributions to Islam.

Terming the ongoing fasting month of Ramazan as a gift of the Almighty to the Muslims, the APHC chairman said the month was not only meant to fast from dawn to dusk but also to imbibe the true spirit of fasting in the lives by remaining steadfast and controlling one’s desires and helping improve the social setup by removing the existent social ills from society.
