Minister urged to open college at Barot

MANDI: Former district BJP president Jawahar Thakur yesterday urged Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani to open a college at Barot in the district.

Former district BJP president Jawahar Thakur yesterday urged Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani to open a college at Barot in the district. Thakur met the minister at Barot who was on a two-day private visit to the tourist town along with her family members.

Thakur said 13 panchayats of Chauhar valley in the district and eight panchayats of Chhota Bhangal in Kangra district were located in the backward areas. There was a population of nearly 35,000, but no institute for higher education of the students of the area, he said.

Poor students of the area were deprived of the higher education and nearly 90 per cent girl students could not go for higher education in the absence of a degree college, he added.

On behalf of 21 panchayats, he urged the Union minister to provide financial support and direct the state government to open a college at Barot, a long-pending demand of the people of the area.

He said the minister had assured to discuss the formalities regarding opening of the college at Barot with the state government.
