Chandigarh, January 20

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has proposed to hike paid parking charges in the city. According to the proposal, the parking rates will be doubled in all parking lots.

At present, the parking charges are Rs 2 for two-wheelers and Rs 5 for four-wheelers in a majority of the parking lots. In a parking lot opposite Elante Mall, the rates are Rs 5 and Rs 10 for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, respectively. In two parking lots in Sector 17 (Sahib Singh and Empire Store), there are hourly parking rates.

According to information, MC Commissioner B Purushartha had ordered to prepare a proposal to hike parking charges in the city as the paid parking was introduced in the city in 2003 and rates were not increased in the past 13 years.

Accordingly, the MC staff have prepared a proposal to hike parking charges. As per the proposal, which will be discussed in the MC House meeting on January 24, the parking charges for two-wheelers will be Rs 5 and for four-wheelers the charges will be Rs 10.

Similarly, the parking charges will be doubled in the parking lot opposite Elante Mall and hourly parking rates will also be increased accordingly.

In the hourly parking in Sector 17, for four-wheelers, parking charges will be Rs 10 for the first four hours and Rs 20 for up to eight hours. An amount of Rs 30 will be charged for parking a four-wheeler for up to 12 hours and for above 12 hours, Rs 40 will be charged.

Similarly, for two-wheelers, Rs 5 will be charged for the first four hours and Rs 10 for up to eight hours. For up to 12 hours, the MC will charge Rs 15, while Rs 20 will be charged if the facility is availed for above 12 hours.
