Shimla, February 6

In a special drive, the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) has cleaned all 39 storage tanks that supply water in the city and issued notices to over 1,150 defaulters, asking them to plug sewage leakages or face disconnections.

The SMC has covered Dhalli, Sanjauli, Engine Ghar, Chamiana, Malyana, Kasumpti, Chhota Shimla, New Shimla, Khalini and Kanlog, which have bore the brunt of the jaundice outbreak, said SMC officials.

“We have covered more than 10,000 houses creating awareness about the jaundice outbreak by ensuring that owners clean water tanks and drink boiled water,” said Municipal Commissioner Pankaj Rai, who is monitoring the situation round the clock.

The MC teams under assistant nodal officers were surveying houses in the city mainly in the jaundice-affected area, he added. Rai said the MC had disconnected water connections of over 80 defaulters who were not plugging sewage leakages. The teams were checking the leakages and ensure that these were plugged.

More than 1,150 notices had been issued to the defaulters, he added.

He said the MC teams would cover the entire city next week. Residents are advised to check leaking sewage.

He said they had asked all school managements to clean the water storage tanks before the school session began after mid-February.
