Mohali, February 22

The Mohali police booked Max Hospital’s CEO, along with two doctors, in the case of causing death by negligence here.

The police booked Sandip Dogra, CEO, Dr Manoj Wadhawa and Dr Anurag Sharma on the complaint of Subedar (retd) Sham Singh at the Phase I Police Station on Friday.

In his complaint, Sham Singh alleged that he had brought his wife, Salwinder Kaur, on August 11, 2014, at the hospital to check her knee problems. He alleged that his wife was admitted to the hospital on August 19, 2014, and the doctors at the hospital had conducted her X-rays and tests of chest and heart.

Sham Singh had alleged that the doctors at the hospital carried out his wife’s operation before the arrival of reports of the tests in question. The patient’s condition deteriorated the very next day of the operation and she was admitted to the ICU, where she remained on ventilator from August 25 to September 8.

He further alleged that the patient was discharged from the hospital on September 10 following some improvement in her condition.

Salwinder Kaur’s condition again deteriorated on September 11, but the hospital authorities had refused to admit her again, alleged Sham Singh. Then she was taken to a hospital at Sohana, where she had died on October 1.

After taking legal opinion in the case, the police booked the CEO and the two doctors.

What hospital says

“Patient Salwinder Kaur was admitted to Max Hospital, Mohali, on August 19, 2014, with advanced osteoarthritis of both knees. After a written consent and clearance and a detailed pre-anaesthesia check-up and counselling (PAC), the patient was taken up for bilateral total knee replacement surgery. She was discharged on September 9, 2014, in a stable and satisfactory condition. She subsequently died on October 1, 2014, in another hospital while undergoing treatment. Max Hospital, Mohali, has always diligently followed established medical protocols and procedures and the same has been done in this case as well. We strongly deny any charge of negligence in the case of Salwinder Kaur,” said a spokesperson for the hospital.
