Mandi to have over 3,000 rainwater harvesting tanks

As many as 3,571 rainwater harvesting tanks have been sanctioned as residents of the district have evinced interest in conservation of water.

Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam said work on 2,354 rainwater harvesting tanks had been completed at a cost of Rs 24.42 crore. “The tanks are being constructed under MGNREGA,” he said.

The DC said 379 tanks had been completed in Karsog, 65 in Chauntra, 402 in Dharampur, 546 in Sundernagar, 175 in Balh, 204 in Gohar, 98 in Gopalpur and 461 in Sadar, adding that work on the remaining tanks was underway.

The harvested rainwater could be used for irrigation and other purposes, he said.

The campaign to conserve water is on in schools as well. About 205 rainwater harvesting tanks will be constructed in educational institutions.

The DC said 187 tanks had already been constructed at a cost of Rs 2.41 crore. He said 17 schools in Karsog, 31 in Chauntra, 38 in Dharampur, 18 in Balh, 20 in Gohar, 19 in Gopalpur, 15 in Seraj and 39 in Sadar block had got the tanks.

The DC said people were being encouraged to construct rainwater harvesting tanks as it was important to use stored water in view of the global warming.
