Long queues were witnessed at the Agricultural Mandi Committee office at Jwalapur and fair price shops where onions were sold at subsidised rates today. The committee is selling onion at the rate of Rs 40 per kg while at fair price shops it is selling at Rs 45 per kg. In the open market, onion prices have touched Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg.
Chairperson of the Agriculture Mandi Committee Sanjay Chopra said on the direction of Chief Minister Harish Rawat and Agriculture Minister Harak Singh Rawat, the mandi was selling onion at a subsidised rate.
He added he had also demanded a mobile van from the Chief Minister so that more consumers could be provided with onions easily as the mandi office was 7 km from Haridwar city.
“Onions from Nashik is of a premium quality, and hence it is being sold at Rs 60 per kg. Onions from Haryana, Rajasthan and other states are available at Rs 40 per kg at the mandi office. People are coming in large numbers to buy onions at subsidised rates and as the demand is high, we are procuring more stock to meet the demand,” he said.
District Supplies Officer Rahul Sharma said two ration shops i.e. the Devpura Consumer Cooperative Union office and Bhoopatwala were also selling onions at subsidised rates.
He said in the coming days more ration shops would be allowed to sell onions at subsidised rates.
On the other hand, a protest was held by the Congress party workers against the BJP-led Union Government for spiraling onion prices.
The party workers said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was now quiet on the issue of price rise. They said during the general elections pre-poll rallies he used to target the Congress for price-rise only to gain political mileage.
“Narendra Modi created an atmosphere that people thought voting him to power would help in controlling the price rise. But, they are now realising that the Congress-led UPA government was better,” said Poonam Bhagat, senior Congress women leader.
