Mandi, January 12

A student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi, has got a job offer of Rs 1.7 crore from Google.

Jaipur-based Shubham Ajmera (22) is pursuing his final year in Computer Science and Engineering from the IIT-Mandi.

Talking to The Tribune on the telephone from Jaipur, Shubham said he would join as software engineer at the Google headquarters in California, US, in October this year.

Shubham said he had applied directly for the job in September last year. He appeared for the online test in October and after clearing the test, he was called for a series of interviews in Bangalore in December last year. The search engine offered him a package of Rs 1.7 crore, he said.

An official said Shubham was probably the first student from the IIT-Mandi to get such a huge pay package. In a recently held placement drive in the IIT-Mandi, nearly 45 students were selected by reputed companies with a maximum annual pay package of Rs 28 lakh, sources said.

An outstanding student, he cleared his Plus 2 examinations from Jaipuria Vidyalaya in Jaipur with 89.6 per cent marks in 2011 and also joined the IIT-Mandi in the same year.

He said his father KC Ajmera, a mechanical engineer, was the force behind his achievement and his mother Sunita Ajmera, a housewife, was a constant source of inspiration for him.

He said he wanted to become an engineer since his school days, as he was good in mathematics and science subjects.

Shubham said he had three other job offers as well, but he had decided to join Google.

Eldest among three siblings, he also wanted to pursue Masters in Science from the US.
