Letter-writing contest marks Philately Day celebrations at Head Post Office

Philately Day celebrations were held at the Postal Department on Tuesday. The day was celebrated as part of the Postal Week celebrations in the department. 

Students from different schools, including Green Land School-Jalandhar Bypass, RS Model Senior Secondary School, Bharatiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School-Kitchlu Nagar and Tagore Public School, participated in a letter-writing competition organised at the Head Post Office. 

Dr SK Sondhi, an avid philatelist, told the students about postage stamps, how these were collected, about different kinds of postage stamps in India and internationally.

Students said they learnt and enjoyed listening about the hobby of postage stamps. Sanya, a Class X student at Green Land Public School, said she would start collecting postage stamps from now on. Another student from the school said it was interesting to know that some of the postage stamps cost worth lakhs of rupees. “I was fascinated to see that there is so much history behind every postage stamp. Stamp collection is a knowledge enhancing hobby,” she added. 

Students who won the letter-writing competition were given ‘My Stamp’ as a prize. They were elated to see their own pictures on the postage stamps. Senior

Postmaster SP Pahwa said days including, Saving Bank Day, Railway Mail Service Day, Philately Day and Postal Life Insurance Day, were being celebrated as part of the Postal Week.
