Srinagar, July 29

The Army stated on Wednesday that a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was arrested in north Kashmir’s volatile Sopore area the day before.

The Army said Ubaid Tariq Untoo, alias Faris, of the Lashkar-e-Toiba was arrested in a joint operation with the J&K Police near the Chanakan locality of the town, 50 kilometres from Srinagar, on Tuesday morning.

“Untoo was the main accused in a blast inside a police vehicle which left undertrial Waheed Noor Khan of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and a constable dead,” an Army spokesman said.

The blast took place on June 20 near Hygam village on the Baramulla-Srinagar national highway, 40 kilometres from here.

Khan was being taken back to the Srinagar Central Jail from a Sopore court in a police vehicle when the blast took place. Four policemen were injured in the blast inside the vehicle.

The Army said the Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was arrested after the receipt of specific intelligence input regarding his movement.

“A joint checkpost was established by the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the early hours on Tuesday,” the spokesman said.

“During the operation, the team apprehended the Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist. He had a Chinese pistol and three live rounds in his possession,” the spokesman added.
