Ludhiana, December 24

Christmas heralds celebrations, but the festivities can intensify mental health difficulties.

Dr Kunal Kala, managing director, Mindplus Retreat, neuropsychiatry and de-addiction centre, said, “While many people will be looking forward to having time off work, for some, Christmas means increased stress, family conflict and alcohol misuse. For others, it is loneliness and isolation from friends and family. Those, who have lost their loved ones, can be poignant.”

He said, “In the hour of crisis, there is always someone to talk to, be it friends, family or support services. It is important that people reach out for the help that’s offered when they need it.”

Tips to keep mentally fit

  • Don’t make Christmas the be all and end all. Do things that you enjoy the most.
  • Help social organisations.
  • Workout reduces stress and the serotonin your body creates gives your mood a lift.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables.
  • Talk to people who care, even if you can’t be with them on Christmas. Many organisations arrange a get-together.
