Chandigarh, June 4

MP Kirron Kher today wrote to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari seeking resolution of the problem of traffic congestion at Tribune Chowk.

In the letter, Kher has desired that some sort of flyover or combination of flyover and underpass be constructed at the rotary. She stated that as this important junction fell on the National Highway, in-principle approval should be granted to the work at the earliest. She added that the appropriate design of the project could be finalised in consultation with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Chandigarh Administration.

When contacted, Kirron Kher said she was hopeful of traffic woes around the Tribune Chowk ending at the earliest.

Kher speaks to Gadkarion phone too

MP Kirron Kher also spoke to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari over the telephone and explained to him the exact problem. The minister reportedly assured the MP that he would go through the letter and get back to her very soon.

Proposal hanging fire

In the Comprehensive Mobility Plan submitted to the UT Administration earlier, the RITES had stated that Tribune Chowk exhibited high traffic volumes (more than 1,00,000 passenger car units). After that, the UT had asked its Engineering Department to explore a proposal for construction of cloverleaf-type flyover to allow smooth flow of traffic at the Tribune Chowk junction, as already been designed by a consultant appointed for the purpose. The proposal is hanging fire for many years.
